Biography

Anya Grundmann, As Senior Vice President for Programming and Audience Development, Anya Grundmann leads NPR’s programming center to create and acquire the highest quality content offerings that engage and grow public radio’s audience on Member stations across the country, and inspire new levels of engagement with audiences on digital platforms including podcasts and voice-activated smart speakers. Anya oversees all of NPR’s non-news programs, NPR Music, NPR Events and NPR’s video strategy. In this role, she led the development of Up First, It’s Been a Minute and How I Built This – some of the country’s most listened-to podcasts with extensions across radio, events and more. Grundmann previously served as the Executive Director of NPR Music, a premiere award-winning source for music discovery and innovative multiplatform journalism. In 2013, Billboard named her as one of the “Power 100” in the music industry. Before the launch of NPR Music, Grundmann was Executive Producer of the NPR Music Unit, producing the national classical programs Performance Today, Symphony Cast, and World of Opera. Grundmann was a Sulzberger Leadership Fellow at the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism and a National Arts Journalism Program Fellow at Columbia University.

Brian Windhorst

Host, Hoop Collective (ESPN)

Biography

Brian Windhorst covers the NBA on ESPN across multiple platforms. He has written for ESPN.com since 2010 and also appears on SportsCenter, The Jump, NBA Countdown and Pardon the Interruption regularly. In 2014, he began NBA Lockdown Insiders, a weekend show on ESPN Radio during the winter with Marc Stein and Amin Elhassan. He also is a regular on ESPN’s TrueHoop podcast.

Windhorst covered the NBA from 2003-10 for the Akron Beacon Journal and Cleveland Plain Dealer. The Akron, Ohio, native graduated from Kent State University in 2000. He is the author of three NBA-related books.

Chris Garcia

Biography

Chris Garcia is a comedian, television writer, and podcaster from Los Angeles. He is launching a new podcast with WNYC Studios later this year.

You may have seen him tell his jokes on his very own half hour special on Comedy Central, This Is Not Happening, Adam Devine’s House Party, and @Midnight. Chris was named a New Face at the 2016 Montreal Just For Laughs Comedy Festival and a “Comedian You Should and Will Know” by Vulture. He has written for Comedy Central, Adult Swim, Broadway Video, and is currently writing for Mr. Iglesias, a sitcom coming soon to Netflix. He’s been a guest on memorable podcast episodes of This American Life, WTF with Marc Maron and 2 Dope Queens.

Clint Schaff

Biography

Clint Schaff is the Vice President of Strategy and Development for the Los Angeles Times, where is developing innovative content, platforms and utilities in areas including audio, video, events and entertainment. He founded NEWSTORY, a storytelling event that debuted at the 2018 LA Times Festival of Books, and drives LA Times’ programming efforts, including Dirty John, Room 20, Larger Than Life, and Pound for Pound.

Prior to the LA Times, he had built and led creative agency teams for The Wonderful Company, GroupM/WPP, Golin/IPG, Edelman and Vision7. His work at Edelman with Activision’s Call of Duty won a Grand Effie, a Gold Effie and a Gold Sabre.  Early in his career, Clint launched two successful startup companies, served as a White House intern and worked for David Bowie and the New York Yankees. Clint taught for a decade as an adjunct professor at USC’s Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism.

David Greene

Biography

David Greene, Host of NPR’s podcast Up First as well as Morning Edition. Before joining NPR in 2005, Greene spent nearly seven years as a newspaper reporter for the Baltimore Sun. He covered the White House during the Bush administration’s first term, and wrote about an array of other topics for the paper. For two years prior to taking on his current role in 2012, Greene was an NPR foreign correspondent based in Moscow covering the region from Ukraine and the Baltics, east to Siberia. Before graduating magna cum laude from Harvard in 1998 with a degree in government, Greene worked as the senior editor on the Harvard Crimson.

Paul Scheer

Host, How Did This Get Made?

Biography

Paul Scheer is a SAG Award-winning actor, writer and director who has established himself as one of today’s go-to comedic artists in film and television. He can currently be seen opposite Don Cheadle in the Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg produced series Black Monday, as well as returning in season two of Hulu’s Future Man, which premiered January 11. He will also reprise his role in the Emmy-winning HBO series Veep in its final season in 2019.

Screen credits include starring alongside Chance the Rapper in the A24 feature Slice and the SXSW coming of age drama Summer 03 with Joey King and Andrea Savage. He also had a role in the Oscar-nominated A24 film The Disaster Artist. Additionally, he co-hosts one of iTunes’s most popular podcasts, How Did This Get Made and, most recently, Unspooled, which debuted as the #1 podcast in TV and Film and in the top 20 in the top 100 podcasts on iTunes.

Ramona Shelburne

Biography

Ramona Shelburne is an NBA Insider and senior writer for ESPN. She contributes to the network’s NBA coverage on ESPN.com, ESPN the Magazine, ESPN Radio and SportsCenter. She is a member of ESPN’s premiere long-form and investigative unit across multiple platforms.

She is the second half of a national radio show called Beadle & Shelburne, where she co-hosts with SportsNation’s host Michelle Beadle (debuts Feb. 14, 2016).

Additionally, she is a regular contributor on shows across ESPN networks like The Jump (debuts Feb. 18, 2016), Around the Horn, Pardon the Interruption, Outside the Lines, SportsNation, NBA Tonight, and NBA Coast to Coast. She also writes for espn W.

Shelburne has been recognized with multiple Pro Basketball Writers Association awards for column writing and breaking news. Her work has also appeared in Sports Illustrated, Stanford Magazine and Sports Illustrated for Women.

She began her career at ESPN as a columnist for ESPNLosAngeles.com. Prior to ESPN, she spent seven years at the Los Angeles Daily News as a columnist and reporter from 2002-2009.

She earned a master’s degree in Communication and a bachelor’s degree in American Studies from Stanford University. During her years at Stanford, she was a three-time Academic All-American athlete in softball and played on the first Stanford team to make the NCAA tournament in 1998 and Women’s College World Series in 2001. Her teammate was fellow ESPN baseball analyst Jessica Mendoza.

Rico Gagliano

Biography

RICO GAGLIANO is an audio host, producer, print reporter and author. He co-created, co-hosted and co-produced the pioneering arts-and-culture podcast THE DINNER PARTY DOWNLOAD, which was downloaded nearly 28 million times and heard by over 600,000 people a week on public radio stations across the USA. Rico’s interviews for the show earned him a Southern California Journalism Award and a National Arts & Entertainment Journalism Award. He also reported for the public radio giant MARKETPLACE — filing stories from around the globe, as well as producing the show’s popular “Marketplace Players” comedy sketches. Rico’s print pieces appear regularly in THE WALL STREET JOURNAL, and he’s the co-author of BRUNCH IS HELL (Little/Brown) a how-to guide for restoring civility by eschewing brunch and throwing dinner parties instead. He was spending way too much cash on vinyl records before it was cool.

Ryen Russillo

Biography

Ryen Russillo hosts the weekly The Russillo Show podcast, which debuted in January 2018. He appears on select ESPN studio shows including SportsCenter, The Jump and Get Up!. He also guests on ESPN Radio talk shows.

Russillo was the host of The Russillo Show on ESPN Radio until December 2017. Before that, he was the co-host of Russillo & Kanell on ESPN Radio and simulcast on ESPNEWS, alongside co-host Danny Kanell. The show debuted August 31, 2015.

Previously, Russillo was the co-host of ESPN Radio’s Scott Van Pelt Show (2-4 p.m. ET M-F), which launched in July 2009. The show was re-named SVP & Russillo in October 2012.

Russillo joined ESPN Radio in February 2006, and has hosted NBA Sunday with Jamal Mashburn, The Baseball Show with Steve Phillips, and the NFL Draft. He has also filled in on talk shows including Tirico and Van Pelt, The Herd (simulcast on ESPNU), and the Doug Gottlieb Show. Russillo was also host of the network’s College GameDay.

Prior to joining ESPN, Russillo was a sports voice in Boston, Mass. where he was a CSN studio host and NBA analyst, and a Sporting News Radio host. Previously, he was play-by-play voice of the Trenton (N.J.) Thunder, the Boston Red Sox Double A team.

Russillo, a native of West Tisbury, Mass., is a 1997 graduate of the University of Vermont.

Biography

Sam Sanders is a reporter and host of It’s Been a Minute with Sam Sanders at NPR. In the show, Sanders engages with journalists, actors, musicians, and listeners to gain the kind of understanding about news and popular culture that can only be reached through conversation. Sanders joined NPR in 2009 as a Kroc Fellow, and since then has worn many hats within the organization, including field producer and breaking news reporter. Stephen A Smith

Host, The Stephen A Smith Show (ESPN)

Biography

Stephen A. Smith, along with Max Kellerman, is a featured commentator on ESPN’s First Take weekdays from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. ET, discussing and debating the sports topics of the day. He joined First Take on a permanent basis in 2012.

In September 2014, Smith began hosting the daily The Stephen A. Smith Show on SiriusXM’s Mad Dog Sports Radio. In January 2017, The Stephen A. Smith Show moved to ESPN’s SiriusXM channel and simulcast on ESPN’s owned and operated stations in New York (98.7FM) and Los Angeles (710AM), airing 1-3 p.m. In January 2018, the program expanded to the national ESPN Radio network and is available across ESPN Radio stations throughout the country. In August 2018, The Stephen A. Smith Show joined the ESPNEWS weekday ESPN Radio simulcast lineup. Smith also hosts several SportsCenter specials on ESPN throughout the year (since 2018).

From 2011 to 2014, Smith hosted a two-hour (1-3 p.m.), weekday local show on ESPN Radio 98.7FM in New York. For one year, starting in 2011, he also hosted a local show on ESPN LA 710AM in Los Angeles, covering both coasts.

Smith made a variety of contributions to ESPN from 2003-08. Smith hosted The Stephen A. Smith Show on ESPN Radio from 2005-08. He was also the host of ESPN2’s Quite Frankly with Stephen A. Smith, a one-hour show featuring sports news, commentary on sports issues, and interviews, from 2005-07. Smith joined ESPN in 2003 as an analyst for the network’s NBA Shootaround (since renamed NBA Countdown) pre-game show. He regularly appeared on ESPN’s SportsCenter, ESPNEWS, First Take and as guest host of Pardon the Interruption and Jim Rome is Burning.

Smith also hosted a morning show on Fox Sports Radio. Previously, Smith held several positions, most recently as a general sports columnist for 16 years with the Philadelphia Inquirer (1994-2010). Prior to joining the Inquirer, Smith was a reporter with the Winston-Salem Journal, the Greensboro News and Record and the New York Daily News.

After attending the Fashion Institute of Technology for one year, Smith received a basketball scholarship to attend Winston-Salem State University, a historically black university in Winston-Salem, N.C., where he graduated in 1991.

Smith made his acting debut on the ABC soap opera General Hospital in a cameo appearance as a television reporter on February 2, 2007. Later the same year, he was in the Chris Rock motion picture, I Think I Love My Wife. Smith returned to General Hospital in April 2016 as Brick, a surveillance expert for the Mob.

Since 2014, he has appeared in a series of Oberto all-natural beef jerky commercials as “The Little Voice in Your Stomach,” each time appearing alongside sports figures, such as Seattle Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman, pro snowboarder Louie Vito and ESPN’s Dick Vitale.

Biography

Tanzina Vega is the host of The Takeaway. She reports and speaks on issues of race, media, and inequality in the United States. She is also an Eisner Fellow at the Nation Institute and a Ferris Professor of Journalism at Princeton University. Tanzina has contributed to CNN, CNNMoney, WNYC Radio, Reuters television, Billboard magazine and The New York Times, where she won an Emmy award for outstanding new approaches in documentary media and various awards from the National Press Photographers Association.

The Winter Podcast Upfront is being put on by the seven presenting networks (ESPN, iHeart, Midroll, NPR, PMM, WNYC and Wondery).

How can I attend the event?

This event is very limited in space, therefore it is primarily an invite-only event. If you’d like to watch the videos after the event, or request an invite if space allows, you can do so by clicking the purple buttons throughout the site.

What will the parking situation be for in-person attendees?

There are lots of metered parking spots available on Civic Center Drive, as well as a parking structure nearby on Rexford Drive.

What can in-person attendees expect?

A full morning of seven presentations from our participating networks. Presentations will include new show announcements, talks from the producers and stars of those shows, and more.

What can you expect out of the video recordings?

All of the presentations will be recorded, and made available for on-demand consumption soon after the event concludes. Only those who attend in-person, or who register for video access, will have access to those videos.
